Red Tails

Today I went to go see Red Tails with a fellow movie junkie. We had to reschedule our trip twice so we were both happy to be there. Ok here is a little confession, I only wanted to see the movie because there are lot of fine black men in the movie. I knew all the eye candy would keep me awake and alert. However that also meant I had not a clue what the plot was really about and what to expect.

The movie quickly became a historical film for me and made me then of the black male students I work with. I would hear great lines in the movie and I found myself asking "how do we bring that type of a young black man back".  These were elite black men who were college educated and had to learn how to be patience to wait their turn to be active in combat. Their sense of brotherhood was real and genuine. It made my heart smile as I watched them interact.

Of course there are parts in the movie that were straight HOLLYWOOD. But the part I really struggled with was the love affair between Lightning (David Oyelowo) and Sofia (Daniela Ruah). Their chemistry was really bland and flat. WHERE IS THE SIZZLE? This is definitely not a chick flick :(

Would I recommend this movie - yes, the great quotes alone makes it worth seeing. But I'm kinda torn if it is something you need to rush out and see in the theatre.  If you are looking for a must see Black History Month film then go out to see it during a matinee time. Otherwise wait a few months to see it on DVD.  But do see it :)
